Facing the library entrance one sees on the right the Roman poet Virgil, author of the Aeneid and other classics. None of the other figures is named; the man lying on his stomach doesn’t look too happy.

On the left is the orator Cicero and listening intently on his right is the philosopher Seneca.  Cicero eventually irritated Mark Antony to the point where the Roman consul had him executed.

Lake Forest Reads: Ragdale - Fall 2015

The Hundred-Year House by Rebecca Makkai

Join your friends and neighbors for the third annual Lake Forest Reads: Ragdale, a one book/one community program that fosters a culture of reading and a sense of community in our city. Each year a title is selected from the works of writers affiliated with Ragdale, the artists’ residency which has supported authors and their creative process for over 35 years.

The Hundred-Year House by Rebecca Makkai is this year’s Lake Forest Reads: Ragdale title.  The story is set in an artists' colony on the North Shore and, while not Ragdale, it is unarguably influenced by its architecture and legacy. A number of related programs will take place at various locations throughout the fall. (See below for details.) Copies of The Hundred-Year House are available to borrow at Lake Forest Library and to purchase from Lake Forest Book Store.  

Rebecca Makkai lives with her family in Lake Forest. In addition to The Hundred-Year House (2014) she has written The Borrower (2011), and Music for Wartime: Stories (2015). She has attended three residencies at Ragdale and is participating in the Lake Forest College program, Writing by the Lake.

Please Note: This fall our adult book discussions are following a slightly different schedule than they have in the past.  Discussions still will be held once a month on Thursdays but note that there are two dates in December in place of a September meeting in the evening and a November date in the afternoon.

The Lake Forest Symphony Listener's Circle at the Library

Become an insider … join the Lake Forest Symphony Listeners’ Circle! Jim Kendros, the

symphony’s Pre-Concert Lecturer and Resident Music Historian, will host a lively discussion on Thursday evenings before each concert. Meetings will be held at 7:00 pm in the library’s programming room.

All programs will feature in-depth backgrounds about each work, the composers, and the times they lived.  You will receive a special study guide, access to Jim’s articles on the symphony’s website, and a list of recommended recordings to further enhance your listening experience.

September 3 Program - Haydn and Brahms

The first meeting will explore the differences (and amazing similarities!) of two symphonic giants: Franz Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms. Learn about Sonata-Allegro form, the structure which gave fuel to the symphony's growth and explore the fascinating stories of how both composers began their symphonic odysseys. While musically very different from each other, these symphonic masters provide remarkable listening experiences to anyone who wishes to explore their legacies.
