Holidays with the Kids: Christmas Books to Keep Little Hands Busy

Need some ideas on how to keep little hands busy during these weeks before Christmas?  Everyone contributing towards holiday preparations  can make them more meaningful and joyful.  Among our holiday books display here in the Children’s Library are new craft books, cookbooks, cultural tradition books, activities and games books, that you can share with your children:

If you and the kids are the crafty sort,  try Christmas and Hanukkah Origami  or Christmas Crafts

Children can do more than just decorate the gingerbread men with Christmas Sweets and Treats,  A Christmas Cookbook: Simple Recipes for Kids or A Kwanzaa Holiday Cookbook.

Looking to incorporate some traditions from your family’s country of origin? Celebrate your family’s cultural heritage or learn how Christmas is the same/different around the world within our  series Christmas Around the World.

Or maybe your children would like to read about some traditions we are all familiar with : Jingle Bells:  How the Holiday Classic Came to Be while you’re singing carols or O Christmas Tree: Its History and Holiday Traditions while you’re putting up the tree.
If you are looking for a family read-aloud  of true life stories that epitomize the spirit of Christmas try reading Truce : the Day the Soldiers Stopped Fighting.

Sometimes you just need everyone keeping themselves occupied.  Christmas Chaos: Hidden Picture Puzzles will keep the little ones out of your hair.

When it’s get-together time, our book Toddler Christmas has pages of activities and games to keep the youngest ones amused during those lengthy car rides.  The Ultimate Indoor Games Book suggests dozens of games for multi-generational participation.  Want to work off some Christmas cookies?  Pick–up Games describes many variations on popular sports that can be played out doors for those annual Family Bowl games.
